RUN 974: one identity
Updated: Feb 19
All over the world, there is one thing that will forever take us together : 974.
this is not a gang stuff, or a code to open a locker (almost) but only the 3 first digits of our ZIP code. so when someone talk about 974 we know right away he is talking about Reunion Island.
for some reason some people who left their home for a foreign country will sometime make themselves recognize by those 3 numbers. you are kind of proud for where you are from, by showing it. Even those who never left the island will do it too.
I use to have a sticker on my car when i lived in France and every time i crossed another car on the street or i had to stopped at a red light - when the driver see the sticker he would ask : Komen i lé ? (Créole Réunionnais) (how are you?) with a big smile.
if you see these 3 digits somewhere it might NOT be a coincidence and i will put my hand to cut that the person who wear those numbers on a tattoo or if it is written on a shirt, or a sticker on a car, the people might come from Reunion Island.
We are part of France, so under the same laws, rules and administrative management. but years ago some people decided that we deserved our own flag, different from the official one, something that will represent really the island. Then came with that idea with 3 colors, red for the volcano, blue for the sky and ocean, finally yellow with the rays of the sun.
Finally, RUN - i mean No stop - don't move! RUN is just an IATA location identifier for airport.
every airport in the world has their own location identifier. So next time you want to book a flight to my Island only use RUN for destination.
Some people now are using it when talking about the island instead of saying Réunion Island they might say la Run, just for fun though.
